Indigenous people co-discovered-Klondike-gold, but remained on the periphery of this historic event -- due partly to their wish to retain their own lifestyle, but also to race prejudice from whites. The Canadian government did not want to sign a treaty with Yukon First Nations, fearing they would choose reserve land on which gold might later be found. By 1898, the indigenous people largely were ignored both by government and traders, receiving the most attention from missionaries trying to Christianize them.
